FES was proud to have been selected as Principal Contractor to deliver a brand new state of the art data centre to support one of the largest Universities in the South of England.

The project involved the construction of a new Primary Data Centre and High Performance Computing facility within an existing industrial unit built around 1995 arranged as circa 2 x 750 m2 halls and 680 m2 office space under a single portal frame roof structure

Building works included the construction of new internal structure and compartmentation to form the new data hall and other internal plant areas within the existing building shell using composite steel panels (SEAP rated LPS 1175). The works also include the reconfiguration and fit out of the existing office areas to form operational areas including a ‘disaster recovery room’ and fit out of general office accommodation.

An external plant compound to house cooling plant, generators, fuel storage and associated supporting equipment is also being designed and constructed. External works include reconfiguration of the car park and provision of security elements to protect the new asset.

The requirement also included the design, installation and commissioning of all building services including HV and LV supplies, UPS, generators, cooling systems, BMS, fire alarm and fire suppression. The ICT specialist fit out was also included as part of the contract and was installed by FES communications division.

Following the completion and handover of the data centre, FES successfully tendered for a three year contract to maintain the data centre on behalf of the University, working alongside their incumbent data centre management provider.
