FES hosts Hand Picked Academy in search of new apprentices

The FES Group partnered with Hand Picked for a second successive year to run two Hand Picked Academies as part of our recruitment programme for the next intake of apprentices.

Looking to fill 36 apprenticeship opportunities across a number of trades, FES hosted the Academies in March to give local school leavers the chance to experience hands-on practical workshops, while learning about the workplace and employer expectations.

On completion of the three-day Academy, all candidates took part in an interview to be considered for one of the jobs available. Thirteen went on to the next round of selection.

Hand Picked, which is run by home improvements company CR Smith on a charitable basis, is a unique employer sponsorship programme that supports young people into employment through paid work placements and its academies. It works with employers who recognise that they have a responsibility to help shape the future workforce and supports them make a positive impact on their local community.

Following last year’s Academy, FES recruited nine apprentices as a direct result of the Academy. Another 11 went on to secure employment, including apprenticeships, with other companies.

Robert Wood, FES Contracts Director said:

“The Hand Picked Academy is a fantastic outreach programme, something that is sorely needed and everyone who participates benefits.

“The open manner and constructive interaction between the Hand Picked team, the FES trainers and the candidates is at the heart of its success. That interaction results in genuine learning and gives everyone a boost.

“We are delighted to work with Hand Picked and look forward to the next round of Academies.”
