Inverclyde Pitches

Inverclyde Pitches

FES FM has overseen £500,000 of artificial pitch replacements at Notre Dame High and All Saints Primary within the Inverclyde area.

As part of the lifecycle replacement strategy for the schools, the pitches were due for replacement and have been upgraded from sand-filled 2G to the rubber crumb 3G, increasing the range of sports able to use them.

FES FM delivers complete facilities management services to the schools and are continuing the pitch improvement works at Clydeview Academy this summer.

Advanced Computing Facility – University of Edinburgh

Advanced Computing Facility – University of Edinburgh

As part of Edinburgh’s drive to become the Data Capital of Europe, a new extension of the Advanced Computing Facility for the University of Edinburgh on its Easter Bush Campus has been constructed with FES acting as the M&E Contractor.

Spearheaded by Robertson Construction, Computer Room 4 – the new extension, was designed and delivered with high resiliency, energy efficiency and flexibility in mind.

The facility can how host up to 270 cabinets, uses new innovative cooling solutions, and can be expanded over the next decade.

The Edinburgh International Data Facility is supported by £78.9 million from the UK Government, £670,000 from the Scottish Government, and £61.3 million from higher education partners as part of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal.

Professor Mark Parsons, Director of EPCC, said: “The project to extend our data centre with the new Computer Room 4 which will be the home for the Edinburgh International Data Facility was a complex one which FES took in their stride. We wanted a room that could host both large-scale data infrastructure and also the latest supercomputing equipment. Despite all of the challenges of 2020, FES delivered an excellent M&E solution. I have been very impressed by the quality of the company’s work throughout this complex project.”

A key component of the programme is the creation of the Edinburgh International Data Facility in Scotland’s capital, with five Data-Driven Innovation hubs being built across the two universities.

Incorporating innovative cooling solutions, the high resiliency computer room is one of the most efficient computer rooms possible.

Infrastructure Kings Building

Infrastructure Kings Building

The University of Edinburgh hired FES as a Design & Build Main Contractor on a single stage design and build contract to deliver the first of six contracts of the Kings Building Infrastructure project in the south of Edinburgh.

The project helped modernise the existing electrical and mechanical infrastructure on-site, including 4 new substations and the installation of a boiler.

Included was installation of Low Voltage and High Voltage electrical wiring of campus. We took several phases as one of the best approaches to ensure the continuation of the live campus environment with minimum disruption for staff members and students.

The project was successfully delivered within a live campus environment.

This stage of infrastructure updates is the first in a planned 10 – 15 years of significant new developments planned for the campus.

V&A Dundee

V&A Dundee

FES was delighted to have been appointed as the Mechanical and Electrical Contractor for this very prestigious project. The building is a three-storey structure, with curving concrete walls and 2,500 pre-cast rough stone panels, weighing up to 3000 kg each and spanning up to 4m wide, which are hung on the walls to create the appearance of a Scottish cliff face. There are 21 separate wall sections, with no straight external walls. V&A Dundee is an impressive 8,000m² building, with 1,650m² of gallery space.

A Low and Zero Carbon Technologies study was undertaken as part of the project’s BREEAM obligation to identify the most appropriate form of renewable energy for the building. Varieties of options were considered, resulting in geothermal energy being identified as the most appropriate solution.

Thirty 200-metre deep bore-holes form part the system for the heating and cooling of the building, supplemented by air source heat pumps on the roof. These provide direct renewable energy for the museum, with 800,000kWh/annum of heating and 500,000kWh/annum of cooling. The project will achieve the BREEAM Excellent category as a recognised measure of sustainability.

A major success on this project has been the early appointment of FES and our active involvement in the Design process influencing technical solutions to meet the complex building layouts for main spine distribution and plant locations. This was developed by using Digital Technology for co-ordination with multi-service modules manufactured off-site at our Pre-Fabrication Facility.

St John’s Hospital Ward 20

RMF Health, a consortium between FES Group and Robertson Construction, has delivered a £2.5m redevelopment of Ward 20 at St Johns Hospital, Livingston, in partnership with NHS Lothian.

The project included the construction of a new surgery theatre for eye and hand procedures, within Ward 20, to support pre- and post-operative care. St John’s Hospital is the regional hand trauma unit and is the referral and treatment centre for patients throughout Lothian.

As well as the additional theatre, the reconfiguration of the existing ward will create a new day surgery unit with two theatres and will improve access for patients requiring hand trauma surgery.

A new theatre had been identified as an area for improvement and will mean more patients can be seen. Patients waiting for hand trauma surgery can sometimes be admitted for an overnight stay, and this refurbishment will provide additional capacity for up to ten theatre sessions per week.

Ignis Wick Energy Centre and District Heating Scheme

Ignis Wick Energy Centre and District Heating Scheme

Ignis Wick Ltd are the owner and operators of the Energy Centre and District Heating Scheme in Wick, having taken over from the previous owners Highland Council. An energy and heating system which has been converted from burning oil to using locally sourced wood chip.

FES had the overall responsibility for the planning application to Highland Council. This included the submission of all relevant drawings, specifications and pro forma on behalf of our client. A full Design, Build and Maintenance project with the need to be mindful, resourceful and innovative in our approach given the working environment.

As part of the overall refurbishment and extension of services to the system, a new 165kWe/260kWth gasification combined heat and power plant was installed along with alterations to an existing 3.5MW biomass steam boiler system to improve its operating efficiencies. The new improved system now provides hot water to nearly 200 domestic properties, a local hospital and a public meeting room/concert hall via the district heating network. The system also supplies steam to the adjacent award winning Old Pulteney Distillery.
